What surprises me the most about working as a UX designer in Tech?
1️⃣ UI/UX design works for and after business strategy.
UI/UX design cannot solve a business strategy problem. If, as a designer, you don’t understand the business strategy, it’s almost impossible to deliver a design that satisfies the stakeholders. Similarly, if the business and product strategy is still a work in progress, you can’t do much. An example for beginners is that you can’t design a landing page without fully understanding the product this business is selling.
2️⃣ Everyone thinks they are a designer.
During bootcamp/classes, you may be the solo designer. But in the real world, everyone has a suggestion, and everyone’s suggestion matters. Most important decisions are made in meetings instead of when you are alone at midnight. That changes the entire story of how to efficiently work on projects.
3️⃣ How little time is spent on the UI.
Most time is spent in meetings discussing product strategies and debating the pros and cons of different design approaches. Not as much time is put into the final UI and prototype because there’s a design system, and things come quickly after the decision is made.
