Elton John - Sartorial Eloquence
This 1980 track from ‘21 at 33’ followed Elton’s Top 10 hit ‘Little Jeannie’. Sartorial Eloquence was written with new wave singer Tom Robinson after they were introduced by Peter Gabriel at a charity concert in 1978. The title wasn’t favoured by Elton’s US record company who insisted on renaming it ‘Don’t Ya Wanna Play This Game No More’ somewhat losing the poetic quality. Elton’s first solo #1 in the UK gets the stripped-down treatment this evening, further revealing the classic beauty of the song’s lyric and melody. Both Elton and Bernie Taupin have singled out this track as a favorite from their five-decade long catalogue, with the lyricist noting that it is somewhat of a companion piece to ‘Your Song’.
