This M. Night Shyamalan’s psychological thriller in 2016 was based on a real-life character. Billy Mulligan was the first multiple-personality disorder patient to reason his condition for his crimes and be acquitted for it. Like Dennis in the film, Mulligan also had 24 personalities. Following several first-degree felonies, Milligan committed three rapes on Ohio State University campus. Milligan’s diagnosis saw him spending a decade in a psychiatric facility instead of prison. Milligan was later released in 1989 as he was deemed stable and spent many years in California. He died of cancer at a nursing home at 59 years old.
